Penny Felts "Erica #1"
12x12 in a 16x20 frame
Printed on metallic paper
My aluminum (tin foil) dress was inspired by three things, that all remind me of growing up in the 90s (Platforms! Hologram everything!) I used Trader Joe's recyclable brown bags for the lining, and layered cut foil onto the dress. I made a coordinating hair bow from the bag handles, which I layered in foil.
Each year in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum hosts a themed fashion party; this year's theme was 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.' Most of the clothing presented was holographic or metallic and gave me inspiration for my dress. Metallics are a huge trend in the city and I see notions of this style on the NYC streets and subway everyday. I wanted to make a timeless silhouette (a simple shift, similar to a 1940's era flapper dress) and update it with the futuristic metallic foil.
I also love sparkly nail polish and I found a metallic silver color recently that reminded me of tin foil. While at the thrift store, I bough metallic platform sandals, that matched the final dress perfectly!
I was so happy to reunite with Penny, build the dress and shoot for this project!
